Paul Simon is a music and entertainment beacon, and fans of several generations will be thrilled to hear that he is returning to the stage with a full schedule of shows around the United States in 2006. Simon’s work evokes different meanings for different people, but the fact remains that very few performers draw from as diverse a fan base as Simon. A look at his life and influences may help to explain why.

Early Life

Simon was born on October 13, 1941 in Newark Heights, New Jersey, but his family soon moved to Queens, which was where Simon was introduced to the world. Simon was raised in a typical family setting, and attended Forest Hills High School, where he became very interested in music.

It was here that Simon met and befriended Art Garfunkel, and the two began playing music together sporadically under the band name “Tom and Jerry”. The immediate bond the two shared centered on their mutual admiration of The Everly Brothers, and they released their first single, Hey, Schoolgirl, in 1957 and it climbed to number 49 on the charts. However, the duo did not begin their famous duo effort at this time. Instead, Simon continued to play on his own and with other artists.

Simon continued his education at Queens College, and he ultimately got his degree in English Literature. During this time, until he finished college, Simon was introduced to the folk music scene in New York City, and he continued to work on his own compositions. Simon released more than 30 songs before he graduated from college, most of which were released on small record labels.

A Legendary Duo

In 1964, Simon and Garfunkel began their longstanding work together by signing a record deal with Columbia Records, and they released their first album, Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. that same year. One of the singles from that first album, “The Sound of Silence”, climbed to number one on the charts, and a dynamic duo was born.

For the next six years, the two singers released seven albums, one of which being the soundtrack for the legendary movie, “The Graduate”. Although none of the singles from these albums achieved huge commercial success, the duo’s work achieved cult status that’s hard to match. A testament to their underground popularity was seen in 1981, when Simon and Garfunkel got together for a concert in Central Park that drew over 500,000 people.

Going Solo

After Simon and Garfunkel split in 1970, Simon continued to release albums, and his influence never waned. Simon released 14 albums during his time as a solo artist, and overall, Simon’s commercial success actually grew, as he produced 17 singles that made the US charts. He also became a renowned musical writer, helping produce several platinum albums for other artists and Broadway productions. Simon continues to write and compose to this day.

Achievements

Paul Simon’s status as an icon was cemented by several honors he received in reflection of his musical influence. Simon was inducted, with Art Garfunkel, into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. Simon was again recognized when he received Kennedy Center Honors in 2002. A year later, Simon and Garfunkel received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, which led to a tour that wrapped up at the Colosseum in Rome in front of a staggering 600,000 fans.

Paul Simon has been perfecting the art of music and performing for nearly 50 years, and this summer’s tour will be an opportunity for fans of all ages to bask in the glow of a musical legend.

One of the more intriguing and mysterious figures in modern music is Beck, and he’s hitting the road this summer to provide more lasting memories for those lucky enough to attend his shows. Some would call Beck a musician, while others would label him as a poet. The general consensus, however, is that there is no label for Beck. Everyone who sees him and enjoys his music comes away with a different meaning and effect, and that trend will no doubt continue for the foreseeable future.

Life Story

Beck was born Beck David Campbell on July 8, 1970 in Los Angeles. His parents seemingly passed his unique set of artistic talents onto him, as his father, David Campbell, was a musician, and his mother, Bibbe Hansen, was a visual artist. One can definitely see and hear these influences in Beck’s work.

Beck’s parents separated early in his life, and Beck adopted his mother’s last name. He stayed in Los Angeles with his mother, and it was here that he gained his first outward exposure to the world of music. Beck spent much of his time in Los Angeles dabbling in interests that included hip hop, rap, rock and roll and Latin music, and eventually, all of these styles were morphed into Beck’s work.

In the mid-1980′s, Beck dropped out of high school and began to educate himself through travel. Beck visited many places, including Germany, before eventually “settling” in New York City, where his musical boundaries were widened once again by his exposure to the punk and anti-folk scenes.

Beck paid for much of his poverty-ridden lifestyle by simply performing on the street with a hat or guitar case, and it was this experience that not only taught him the value of stage presence, but it also reinforced the belief in Beck that the responsibility of putting on a show along with just playing music was a crucial element in an artist’s success.

In 1990, Beck moved back to Los Angeles, where he lived in a series of hovels and worked several low-level, dead-end jobs to augment his income he made by street performing. During this time, Beck tirelessly searched out venues that would allow him on stage to perform, and his tireless efforts eventually led to “the break” that every musician needs.

Career Takes Off

Beck was discovered in Los Angeles by the founders of Bong Load Custom Records, and the first single Beck recorded for them is still his biggest hit to date. The single Loser was released in 1993, and the demand for this single astonished everyone involved with the project. Radio stations everywhere were looking for copies of the single to satisfy their listeners. Eventually, a bidding war between highly-visible record labels led Beck to sign with Geffen Records.

Since then, Beck has produced eight subsequent “official” albums as well as several independent releases with smaller labels. Every one of Beck’s albums has sold at least 200,000 copies, and his biggest seller was the 1996 release Odelay, which sold over 2,000,000 copies worldwide.

Comparisons

Musical experts from every corner of the globe have struggled for years to find an appropriate artist for comparison. The list is long and varied, which speaks to just how unique Beck’s style really is. Several prominent artists that have drawn these comparisons include Prince, The Beastie Boys and even Bob Dylan.

Beck’s unique style of music is no more or less memorable than the stage show he provides. Props are often used, and humor is always a central part of any performance. Beck also enjoys collaborating with other artists both in the studio and on tour, and he has appeared and/or worked with the likes of The Flaming Lips, David Bowie and Jack White of the White Stripes.

Beck will continue to thrill and sometimes baffle the music industry with his style and eccentricities, and his tour this summer will encapsulate all that he’s learned and accomplished in his career.

A harmonic is a tone that’s created by the guitar by touching the string above a fret on an open vibrating string. There are 2 types of harmonics Natural and Artificial or I prefer to call them pinch harmonics.

Natural Harmonics

Natural Harmonics can be produced by touching your index finger on your fret-hand above at the 5th, 7th or 12th fret. Just place your finger on the string above the fret, don’t press to hard or you will mute the note, pluck the note and then pull your finger off. Try it on the A string.

E||
B||
G||
D||
A|12|
E||

Timing is critical when playing harmonics. The length of time you keep your finger on the string will determine if you hear a harmonic, muted sound or just a regular note. Natural harmonics occur in various locations along the fretboard. The most common ones are on the 5th, 7th, and 12th fret. The harmonics in those positions will ring for all 6 strings on the same fret. Try playing them in all 3 positions. Place your finger across all 6 strings and play from the Low E to the high E lifting your finger as your pick strikes each individual string. You have to work at this and it takes some time, but it sound so cool.

E|5|7|12—|
B|5|7|12|
G|5|7|12|
D|5|7|12|
A|5|7|12|
E|5|—7|12|

Pinch Harmonics

Pinch harmonics are done with the pick hand hand. I found this technique very difficult to master. The best method is to “choke” down on your pick so there is very little pick exposed between your thumb and your index finger. With time you’ll learn the pick has to be mobile in your hand, and you will move it into different position depending on how you play. Now when you pluck a string with your pick the trick is to hit the pick first and then slightly twist your thumb so that it touches the string immediately after hitting the string.

Why play a pinch harmonic…..well because they are very cool when playing solos. You can combine string bends with pinch harmonics and vibrato to get totally cool sounding “squeals”. They even sound great when you do them by accident. The trick is to devote some of your practice time everyday to just playing cool licks and try adding a pinch harmonic with some demonic vibrato. Oh yea, it makes you want to play more guitar because you can just create some of coolest sounds!

When playing any musical instrument, you need to learn how to play the notes. If you want to play any instrument, you have to have one and this is especially true if you want to play a guitar. The notes are played on the guitar’s fret board. Learn to play guitar notes now and you too can conquer the guitar’s fret board.

You don’t have to be scared of the fret board. Even if it seems that it’s hard to learn the notes, if you really want to learn how to play the guitar, this should not discourage you.

Playing the very first songs on your guitar will be easier if you know the notes on the first guitar string. On this string, there are three notes – E, F (first fret), and G (third fret). The second string is B, C (first fret), and D (third fret). Now that you know the notes, you have to conduct some exercises. Slowly play these notes and make sure that you concentrate to learn notes well.

You don’t have to say all the notes out loud when you’re practicing. You can do this inside your mind and then slowly play them. You must know the notes as well as their names, and most especially their sounds. Know them by heart. You can start by playing simply melodies like that of nursery rhymes.

After mastering the notes on the first two strings, you have to proceed on the third string. G is the open string and the other note is A (second fret). When you know these notes already, start playing them together with the other notes you’ve learned previously. Again, you must stick with simple songs. You don’t have to work on all the notes at once. Try to master each of the notes and learn them consciously. Even small children can learn guitar notes easily. Follow these steps and in no time, you can play the notes on the guitar.

Learning to play guitar notes will be very hard if you don’t have your own guitar. You can’t depend entirely on the music sheets that you have. You have to hear the notes being played on the guitar’s fret board. Many beginners fail to learn because they don’t have guitars on their hands. Once you learn the notes, you can now read advanced music guitar sheets.

Everyone knows nursery rhymes and even if you’re all grown up, you still know these songs. It will be a lot easier to learn the notes by using these simple songs. Once you master and memorize the notes, you can now play the songs that you like.

Guitar notes are not really hard to learn as long as you know what to do. You don’t need an expert teacher in order to learn these things. You can teach yourself these note lessons by using DVD programs or internet guitar programs. You can also use an instruction book. Still, if you can afford the expensive guitar teachers, you can always hire them. But let this serve as a reminder, no matter how good your teacher is, if you don’t have the right attitude in learning, you will not learn anything.

You see, guitar playing is like the lessons that you learn in school. You must know the notes by heart, you have to be motivated and you must be persistent.

A Closer Look At The Acoustic Guitar

The Acoustic Guitar

As was mentioned in our article on “the History of the Guitar,” guitars have been around for centuries. The original guitars were Acoustic guitars, which changed in shape over several hundred years. Since you’ve already been given a timeline of the evolution of the guitar, in this article we’ll go into greater depth discussing the Acoustic guitar itself.

History

The Acoustic guitar is essentially a descendent of the Classical guitar, which, in its current form, has been around for over 100 years. The main difference between the Classical and Acoustic guitars are that one is strung with nylon strings, while the other is strung with steel strings. Since the Acoustic guitar is strung with steel strings, it has a louder, brighter sound which is appealing to folk and blues players.

Another difference between the Acoustic and Classical guitars is that the Acoustic guitar has a bigger body size, stronger structure, and a narrower neck than does the Classical guitar. The structure of the Acoustic guitar is stronger so that it can withstand the immense tension placed on it by the heavier steel strings.

Acoustic-Electric guitars haven’t been in existence for nearly the amount of time that their Acoustic counterparts have. These guitars, which have the ability to be both plugged into an amp and played unplugged, have been around for roughly 70 years.

All about the Acoustic guitar

The bodies of cheap Acoustic guitars are typically made from laminated tonewood. More expensive Acoustics are made from higher cuts of solid spruce top wood On an Acoustic guitar, the material which the body is made from really matters, so those looking for a rich sound will want to choose a guitar with a body made from nicer wood such as spruce top wood.

The neck of the Acoustic guitar is usually made from maple, mahogany, or rosewood. However, some guitar necks are comprised of different woods. Yet again, the quality of wood does matter. Generally speaking, Acoustic guitars with necks made of a high quality maple or mahogany and bodies made with solid spruce top are quality guitars with great tone. These guitars usually cost $250 on up.

The vibration of the strings is amplified by the soundhole of the guitar. This is where all sound that you hear comes from.

If you look inside the soundhole of the Acoustic guitar, you’ll see the construction of the body. There are braces and linings, all essential to keeping the guitar intact and playable. X-bracing, a strong, durable bracing, is typically used on Acoustic guitars because it is heavy and strong enough to withstand the pressure of steel strings.

On the body of the guitar, you’ll find the bridge. This is where one end of the strings goes. The strings are inserted into the little holes and the bridge pegs hold them there.

On the neck of the Acoustic guitar is the fretboard. Most fretboards on the Acoustic guitar are made of rosewood or ebony. More expensive Acoustic guitars have fretboards made of higher quality woods.

The headstock of the Acoustic guitar features six tuning pegs (three on each side of the headstock) and six tuners (three on each side of the headstock). Good Acoustic guitars will have die-cast Grover tuners which usually stay in tune longer than other brands of tuners.

Like their Electric counterparts, Acoustic guitars are tuned in the standard E A D G B E tuning. Most Acoustic guitars have six strings, while some have twelve. If you are curious as to the difference between the two, check out our article on “Twelve string vs. Six string”.

The Acoustic guitar still remains a very popular instrument. It is used in virtually every style of music-rock, pop, country, blues, you name it. Acoustic guitars are wonderful instruments for both beginners and professionals.

Santa Monica, CA (PRWEB) March 13, 2008

Gibson is proud to introduce three limited edition Slash Les Paul guitar models — one each from Gibson USA, Gibson Custom Shop, and Epiphone — made in close cooperation with the brilliant guitarist behind Guns N’ Roses and Velvet Revolver and available at dealers worldwide on April 1, 2008.

In tandem with the debut of Slash’s signature Les Paul guitar models, Gibson has launched a user-friendly microsite, http://www.gibson.com/slash/, that includes detailed Slash Les Paul guitar specs and information, guitar photo galleries and 360 degree imagery, exclusive interviews with Slash and some of the web’s most comprehensive editorial content celebrating the life and music of Slash.

Also, giving Slash fans a once-in-a-lifetime chance to win a Gibson Custom Shop Slash Signature Vintage Original Spec guitar, valued at $ 5,880 MSRP, is the ‘Gimme That Cool Slash Les Paul Gibson YouTube Guitar Video Contest’. Fans are encouraged to make and submit an original, Slash-related video that lets Gibson and Slash know how much they love him, how bad they want to win a Slash signature Les Paul guitar, and why they deserve it more than anybody else. Videos should be uploaded onto YouTube and then submitted on the contest page of the Slash mircrosite: http://www.gibson.com/slash/videocontest/.

Crafted of a solid mahogany body and maple top, and equipped with Slash’s favorite Seymour Duncan Alnico II Pro humbuckers and a specially commissioned neck profile, Slash’s three signature Les Paul guitar models are Gibson’s tribute to the iconic guitarist and the guitars he has used exclusively throughout his incredible career. Each model is distinguished by details that Slash himself specified. The USA Slash Signature Les Paul Standard has an Antique Vintage Sunburst finish and Slash’s skull and crossbones, top hat logo, and signature on the headstock, and the Custom Shop Slash Signature Vintage Original Spec guitar comes gently aged with a Heritage Cherry Sunburst finish that mimics Slash’s favorite Les Paul as it was in 1988, the year he received it from Gibson. The Epiphone Slash Signature Plus Top guitar comes with a Dark Tobacco Burst finish and the new LockTone Stopbar/Tune-o-matic system, which adds 20 percent more sustain and secures the bridge and the tailpiece to the guitar even without strings.

Press can download hi-res guitar images of each model at http://www.gibson.com/press.

Napa, CA (PRWEB) March 24, 2010

Dr. Martin Taylor MBE is pleased to announce his partnership with online video exchange pioneers, ArtistWorks, Inc. The team will launch the Martin Taylor Guitar Academy (MTGA) on April 15, enabling students from around the world to receive a unique interactive education with the jazz guitar virtuoso online. Martin Taylor has established an extraordinary career as an internationally acclaimed musician, and his distinctive style has seen him recognized as a veritable modern master of solo jazz guitar playing.

Taylor has enjoyed a remarkable musical career spanning four decades and is known as a true guitar innovator for his ability to syncopate rapid bass lines with the guitar melody, often incorporating thumb-upstrokes on the bass strings for a distinct rhythmic quality. Taylor is widely recognized for his acoustic group “The Spirit of Django” and collaboration with musicians from various genres including, Stephane Grappelli, Chet Atkins, Bill Wyman, George Harrison, Dionne Warwick, Sacha Distel, Bryn Terfel, David Grisman and Jamie Cullum.

Taylor is an Honorary Doctor of the University of Paisley, Scotland, and in 2002 was appointed MBE (Member of the British Empire) “For Services to Jazz Music” by HM Queen Elizabeth of England. Taylor has received a long list of prestigious awards, including recognition by the International Association for Jazz Education. With the advent of the MTGA partnership, he will now preside over a worldwide student body of solo and fingerstyle players.

Taylor will share his inimitable talent and expertise in over 150 HD video lessons that range from simple tunes to highly advanced playing. The extensive video curriculum is presented on the innovative ArtistWorks online platform, allowing Taylor to use the latest internet video exchange technology to break the barrier of one-sided learning. Taylor personally instructs students through the video exchange system — using a simple webcam, students can submit a video of themselves practicing their online lessons, which Taylor will review and issue a Video Response. Both videos are then posted together on the site so that the entire online community can learn, 24/7. Video submission is not required, study is self-paced. Students will be able to access multiple versions of most lessons, including an overhead perspective as well as slowed down and pitch-corrected videos. Perhaps the most anticipated feature of the MTGA lessons is the transcription — Martin Taylor’s work is notoriously difficult to transcribe and will be a valuable reference tool for students for mastering each lesson. The MTGA incorporates fully featured social media, including Student Profile Pages, Messaging, Forums and Chat — uniting the world of solo and fingerstyle guitarists in one central place. The Martin Taylor Guitar Academy resides at http://www.MartinTaylorGuitar.com .

The MTGA launch closely coincides with the release of Taylor’s newest recording. To mark the 100th Anniversary of the birth of Django Reinhardt, one of the founders of European jazz, Martin Taylor has reformed his award winning group “Spirit of Django” after a 15 year hiatus. The new album is entitled “Last Train to Hauteville.” If you can imagine the ideal soundtrack to driving through the scented country roads of France on a hot lazy summer’s day then it would be the music of Martin Taylor’s Spirit of Django. Learn more about Martin Taylor at http://www.MartinTaylor.com .

About Artistworks

The ArtistWorks online visual education format allows virtuoso musicians to “Teach the World” by presenting their full method, technique or curriculum in HD video to subscribing students of their sites. Simple webcams are used by the students to submit videos to the Artist through the site, for critique and guidance if they want personalized instruction. The Artists manage the video flow by using the Video Management System created and owned by ArtistWorks, Inc. (patent pending). Regardless of whether or not students participate in exchanging videos with the Artist, these “Video Exchanges” are posted for all subscribing students to learn from. This groundbreaking use of video exchange for the instruction of musical instruments has been implemented at Jimmy Bruno Guitar Institute, the Qbert Skratch University, Andreas Oberg Guitar Universe, Peery Piano Online, Tony Trischka School of Banjo and Howard Levy Harmonica School.
Cupertino, CA (Vocus/PRWEB) March 26, 2011

Halo Custom Guitars serves musicians worldwide and has expanded its offering of baritone guitars. The addition of twenty new models provides discerning guitar players more features and higher performance compared to existing choices on the market today.

The expanded offering of baritone guitars was driven by strong consumer demand and shifting trends in modern heavy metal music. “For 2010, Halo’s top selling models were from Baritone and Extended Range categories,” stated Jeff Lee, General Manager with Halo Custom Guitars. “Baritone and extended range guitars are like regular guitars, except they play lower notes and sometimes higher notes, or both. Heavy metal music is primarily electric guitar-driven and that makes it necessary for heavy metal guitarists to use high performance electric guitars like Halo’s. Modern heavy metal music tends to be played in lower tunings, which is something standard guitars were not designed to do.”

Halo Custom Guitars’ new baritone guitar models are designed to play in lower tunings and are available in electric and acoustic versions. Halo baritone guitars are equipped with advanced components, which offer similar or better performance than many higher priced instruments.

“It’s exciting to be part of Halo Custom Guitars as they are growing and their products are differentiated from what you would find in most guitar stores,” stated Alvin Gatewood, Halo’s Quality Control Manager and long time guitar player. “There are not enough professional options available when it comes to baritone guitars. Halo’s new baritone guitars utilize Neck-Through-Body Construction, which is an advanced guitar building method that produces better sound and stability. With Neck-Through-Body Construction, the guitar’s neck runs through the entire length of the instrument. This construction method produces an instrument with superior resonance and sustain by making the neck a component of the instruments body, rather than an attached extension of the body, as is found in other construction methods. Halo baritone guitars incorporate many professional features and with factory direct prices – it’s a win-win situation.”

“In addition to offering one of the largest selections of baritone guitars, Halo Custom Guitars also offers a comprehensive build-to-order service through the Halo Custom Shop,” stated Bruce Lee, Halo’s Sales Director. “The Halo Custom Shop specializes in building guitars according to customer-supplied specifications. The result is our customers receive professional instruments tailored to their exact needs.”

Musicians interested in learning more about Halo Custom Guitars’ new baritone models can visit http://www.haloguitars.com or speak with a Halo Representative at 1-408-873-8606.

About Halo Custom Guitars

Halo Custom Guitars, a front runner in build-to-order guitar manufacturing, provides fully customizable guitars and basses to consumers worldwide. Halo Custom Guitars offers more custom options, faster delivery, and more affordable pricing than most guitar companies in the U.S. Founded in 2005, Halo Custom Guitars has quickly become a musician’s trusted source for professional instruments at affordable factory-direct pricing.

Charlotte, NC (PRWEB) January 31, 2007

The next time you need guitar strings, log onto Strings and Beyond (http://www.stringsandbeyond.com) and listen before you buy!

Strings and Beyond, one of the world’s largest on-line retailers of guitar strings and accessories, has created the first ever “Sound Room.” Customers can listen to the different types of acoustic guitar strings before they buy. The Strings and Beyond Sound Room can be found at http://www.stringsandbeyond.com/soundroom.html.

“Customers get to check out guitars and drums before they buy, so why not strings?” says Mike Griggs of Strings and Beyond. As managing partner of Strings and Beyond, Griggs has a passion for bringing interesting buying experiences to his customers. “With the technology we have available today, it’s surprising that this hasn’t been done already.” Customers can listen to guitar strings from different manufacturers and different materials in different types of guitar sound clips before they purchase their strings. This will revolutionize the way guitarists purchase strings by giving them a better idea of how different strings compare in sound qualities before they buy.

Customers seem to love the new Sound Room. Timothy Ryan of Atlanta, Georgia says, “The sound room was a great idea! I used to purchase 5 different kinds of strings to see how they might sound on my guitar, but now I can narrow it down to just a few instead.”

Strings and Beyond sells a variety of acoustic, electric and bass guitar strings on-line, as well as a variety of guitar accessories. Strings and Beyond prides itself on providing fast and friendly service to customers. Customers can find their full catalog on-line at http://www.stringsandbeyond.com .
